I think the WW2 buff stuff is because people really dislike complex villains and WW2 seems to give clean ones, and allows us to imagine violence can be righteous.

Yeah war veterans are too traumatized to talk about it. They’re usually anti-war at that point

I went to a writers’ conference and they told us that WW2 books/novels always get picked up and always sell. They just can’t explain it! It always sells! Almost like they were baiting writers/artists into doing this as a way to make a name and break in to the business. It was weird. But then I noticed all the romanticized films that keep winning awards. If they’re all in on this, it makes sense.

You hit the nail on the head. WWII docs, especially the ones where interviews with the vets who served act as narrators, bubble up this romanticized notion of duty, pride, the greater good, etc.

I knew very well two men in my family who were in WW2. They refused to speak about it, refused to go to ANZAC day (in Australia). They absolutely hated the tradition in Australia of younger family members wearing the medals of deceased who served and marching in parades. My Uncle was on the Kokoda track for 5 years. He then devoted the rest of his life to learning about other cultures, volunteering to teach English to refugees and immigrants etc. He was constantly approached to be part of documentaries and books about the war, but he knew it was propaganda and indoctrination.

The genuine intellectual history nerds that are very widely read often end up very anti war with what would be deemed extremely left wing politics

Millennial GWOT Vets and Moral Injury…war isn’t necessary, helpful, or purposeful. We perpetuate a false narrative of heroism rooted in imperialism. We are the empire, never the rebels, yet the Revolutionary War is our “hero” story.

It goes really deep. Football, baseball, boxing, are all priming people for war. Either to cheer for war by the millions or to fight for your team. Loyalty is a poison to humanity.

My father was a Vietnam Veteran…. He was army infantry… died in 2015 - he had a Bernie shirt in his closet… He also predicted everything that’s happened… I’m glad he didn’t have to see Jan6, or RoeVWade being taken away after he marched for it- he was anti war 100%. I miss him.
