@amierhaidarmd: Hypertensive emergency is a BP >180/120 with evidence of acute end-organ damage. Severe hypertension is that same BP without acute target organ damage. These patients should not have their BP aggressively lowered and giving IV medications may actually be harmful. #medicaleducation #medicaltiktok #doctor #medschool #residency
Just played this on the overhead pager at my hospital

Okay but have you ever had a nurse report you to safety board for not treating asymptomatic hypertension in a patient not admitted for cardiovascular concerns?

Totally agree, nurse and patient education also go a long way. Another nugget, the term “hypertensive urgency” has fallen out of favor for documentation purposes. Chronic severe hypertension w or w/o EOD ✅

Had a patient had a femoral neck fx whose bp was greater than 170 systolic bc she was in pain. Pain medicines fixed her bp

In the UK I've seen people just give a stat of oral ramipril or amlodipine for BP >180/90 without end organ damage arguing it needs treatment due to increased risk of stroke etc

My systolic pressure typically falls between 100 and 120, while my diastolic ranges from 85 to 94. Is there anything I can do to reduce my diastolic pressure? Medical history of hypothyroidism and I'm pre-diabetic. On my dad's side of the family, most relatives passed away due to heart disease.
