The idle thing is only for carburetered engines modern cars behave differently. Like the worse thing for an engine is when it’s cold start

my 535d won't really warm up if I just let it sit and idle, it only warms up when you start driving. it needs load on the engine to warm up. I have brand new thermostats too

in the summer I'll idle for like 20 seconds in the winter till rpms drop plus a little. my 2.0 tdi would never reach operating temps idle in the winter. sometimes I drive for 30 min and it's still not fully warm

Let it idle for 20 seconds so that the oil gets everywhere after that just drive off slowly

Around 1-2 mins and then go very low rpm to warm up the gear diff also

Newer diesels have electronic injections so wait 1-2 min then drive on low rpm’s

i dont do it for the engine, if i dont do it its too cold to sit in, so i let it idle and them go make breakfast

Diesel or gas, block heater work perfectly and helps a lot, so I just plug it in for an hour before needing to go, Unplug it, start it, clear the snow while the engine is running for like 3-5min, connect Bluetooth, select song and then start driving
