Another option for the blackout if to get blackout honeycomb blinds instead of curtains. They are very energy efficient, give the blackout effect, and open up a lot more curtain options for decorating.

All great tips, with the exception of the down comforter (a lot of people are allergic). Also, the scents are nice, but can also be a challenge for the same reason.
