@nick.sensei: this isn’t about being offensive. it’s about how people think. population level statements describe patterns, not individuals. averages aren’t guarantees. exceptions don’t cancel trends. when someone responds to statistics with anecdotes, they’re not disagreeing. they’re missing the level of analysis. this shows up everywhere. height. income. health. behavior. risk. understanding base rates and distributions is basic statistical literacy. without it, conversations collapse into vibes and stories. patterns ≠ people. and if you can’t separate the two, you already know how far that discussion is going to go.

Especially when they say “I’m Black and never experienced racism” after I give a generalized statement of racism looks like in what ever environment.

Statistical thinking is meant for patterns, not personhood. Use statistics to understand systems, improve policies, and identify inequities. But use direct experience to understand people.

Hmm, people misuse, misconstrue, and misinterpret statistics all the time in bad faith. Sometimes you need to push back on statistical averages

The problem is that a lot of people weaponize statistics and use them as an excuse to discriminate against others which is why the targeted people get defensive and point out the exceptions
