At the price of cattle & grain right now, It is worth buying feed, even if just straw & grain and keep them off those swaths until you can spring silage or silage bale those swaths.
Each slipped calf you are loosing out on $3000+
The snow depth this year alone makes swaths grazing tough to do unless you have a herd of draft horses to mix into your cattle.

Does it pay to swath graze where you guys have snow? In sw Sask 9/10 years we don’t get enough snow to cover swaths and still struggle with if it pays to swath graze vs just throw a few bales out

Bale then grind. That way you have more control gradually mixing it in with silage.

if u have access to some cracked corn or something u can supplement thats higher energy with ur silage. your snow will definitely slow them down...I think you will be fine as long as you arent forcing them to just eat the barley swaths and clean it all the way up...

keep it until spring to make feed. the price of cattle isn't worth the risk
