@hedgerow_healing: ✨️ Twelfth Night Folklore ✨️ Twelfth Night (or the feat of Epiphany) is one of the last great feasts of the season. Before the invention of the Gregory's calendar it was observed around the 13th of January, but since the invention it takes place on the 5th of January. It was the Twelfth day of Cjristmas. A time for revelry, wassailing, games, tricks, folklore and guising. A time to rejoice in the festive season before returning to work and normality. One Twelfth Night superstition was to take down all winter evergreens (yes even the tree) by midnight, or it was widely believed that bad luck would come to that household. Some even practiced taking it down before darkness, just to be sure. Once the evergreens were taken down, they were placed on a bonfire and ritualistically burnt. A way to release the old year and welcome in the new one. Once the evergreens had been burnt, other folk customs such as Wassailing, guising, mumming and Mari Llwyd visitations would begin. A final farewell to the strangeness of deep winter, and a time to welcome the trees for the coming spring.
