There’s something painfully relatable about saving something for the “perfect” moment until the moment never comes. 😭 As a kid, the logic made complete sense. A sticker could only be used once, so obviously you couldn’t waste it on some random notebook. What if you found a better place tomorrow? What if you regretted it? Better to keep it safely on the sheet until you were absolutely certain. Then years pass, you find the sticker sheet buried in a drawer, and realize the thing you were protecting so carefully never actually got enjoyed. And somehow that tiny childhood habit can follow you into adulthood in much bigger ways. You save the nice clothes for the right occasion. You don’t start the project until you know exactly how you want it to turn out. You wait to make a decision because maybe a better option will appear. You hesitate to tell somebody how you feel because what if you regret saying it? You keep waiting until you’re completely confident, completely prepared, completely certain—and life rarely gives you that kind of certainty. The strange thing about perfectionism is that it can disguise itself as responsibility. It feels like you’re being careful, when sometimes you’re really just so afraid of making the wrong choice that you avoid making one at all. And not choosing feels safer because at least you haven’t ruined anything yet. But eventually you realize that leaving the sticker on the sheet was a choice too. The notebook stayed empty. The opportunity passed. The thing you were saving never became part of a memory because protecting its potential became more important than actually experiencing it. Obviously, thinking before making major decisions is a good thing, and not every impulse needs to become an action. But some parts of life aren’t supposed to be optimized perfectly. Sometimes you choose the restaurant without researching every other restaurant first. You wear the expensive shirt on an ordinary Tuesday. You start before you’re completely ready. You tell somebody you love them without knowing exactly how the story ends. You put the sticker somewhere and accept that maybe someday you’ll wish you’d chosen another spot. Because the goal was never to preserve the sticker forever. The goal was to enjoy having it. And maybe that’s true of more things in life than we realize.
