First of all- I always respond. I say thank you- I usually add a genuine component of how are team and leader work great together and I use actual examples in context. But….. I know from colleagues that they’re terrified of seeming insincere, a kiss up - having an agenda. I’ve also noticed this varies on region: the most notable shift when I moved from California to Philadelphia. People were suspicious of my solution focused personality and I really had to prove myself before building trust that I meant what I said. Folks from Toronto were unlikely to speak in superlatives but were much more likely to use a simple please and thank you. Germans are similarly polite but much less likely to provide any positive feedback. These are just a few examples to articulate that the response can be cultural depending on socioeconomics and regions. My 2 cents
