Weight/balance. If passengers were to board rear to front, the weight would be off and the plane would tilt back and potentially damage the aircraft. This happens every so often.

It has nothing to do with weight balance. It’s a psychological upsell. You want bag space? Pay for priority. You want to be first? Pay for priority. You want to get off sooner? Pay for the front. It’s all marketing.

It has to do with the balance of the plane. If they boarded the people sitting in the back first, then the plane could potentially tip backwards given the landing gear being so far forward on planes.
