I'm guessing that the conditions described related to Portugal & Spain. Significantly the French soldier had it harder & were expected to live off the land when on campaign generally where they were unwelcome invaders. Okay if in Italy or Germany, not so good in Winter in Poland etc. Years after the Napoleonic Wars an old British military veteran was asked his opinion of Wellington. He paused for a time then observed "well we never went hungry". Cold praise indeed!

nice little info droop and before anyone else points it out the paint in the background of your video is of the charge of the light brigade painted by M. Coleman (if I recall) that's was the battle of Balaclava and not the Napoleonic wars
