Tony :
you misunderstood his relationship with the table tennis league- he's banned from the sport.

I agree and I think it's objectively true that Marty Supreme isn't a cautionary tale. On top of that no one received the movie as such in the first place.

Not even close bro. He didn’t “choose” anything at the end of the movie he was out of options. He didn’t beat Endo so he could go back home to his family he did it for glory. He didn’t chose to leave Japan after that either he was kicked from the league. He “chooses” his family at the very end when he realizes what he could have lost. It IS a cautionary tale.

He doesn’t redeem anything. He makes the same choices the entire film. The only thing that changes is he realizes he cares about his baby. That is not remotely a redemption arc. It’s a realization that might start a future redemption arc.

You talk about him making this sacrifice for his family, but in the scenes, we never see him contemplating his family. He only betrays the rich guy for his own pride; and he only does that after knowing that he will not be able to be in the competition later anyway.

Does this argument not just fall apart within itself? This guy is saying that Marty refuses to lose an exhibition match he promised he would lose, because he wants to prove that he's the best? Why would a selfless character need to prove that? And in what way does him betraying this guy help his family? Couldn't he have just lost the game still and then gone back to his family?

I agree with all of what you said but why is your satisfaction dependent on his full consequences? I saw it as the story isn't over, more consequences are coming but he's happy being a father

I personally think it was a large enough sacrifice. I feel like throughout the movie (especially being willing to be paddled), he showed that his ambition was everything he was. His life was dedicated to his dream. Giving up his dream was equivalent to giving up himself, which I think is worthy

Yup, Rachel was the only person who cared about his dream as much he did and while she was bleeding out, about to pop, all she could think about was his trip to Japan. The redemption angle is further cemented by the director talking about the scrapped ending montage of their future life, his job at the shoe store, etc

I like your interpretation but you are projecting a lot of resolution and evolution onto Marty. Whos to say he's going to put down the paddle?

Oh I see: people really think him giving up table tennis is “losing everything” because the don’t see the value in his family or relationships.
