If you don’t have such tool, could one use a multimeter and look for a voltage drop while cranking the car?

If it’s a Subaru, it’s always the battery. Every Subaru has a bad battery. The charging and grounding systems suck. They have high drain with keys off. I have to turn off my auto headlights before I shut off the car or the battery is dead flat the next morning. Not all the time though because it’s not something that always happens, but it happens often enough to be a pain in the ass. Obviously that voids the battery warranty, when you replace it once every six months. The charging system always tests ok, there’s never a drain showing. But I have to turn my auto headlights off when I park it.

It's hard to beat the old carbon pile load tester.

there's a TSB on most 2020+ Subaru models to increase the battery size over the factory batteries due to auto start/stop. This Outback should now have a 700+ CCA EFB battery

I have the old hand held tester that puts a load on the battery, maybe old school but I believe in it to test them 🤣

You said your big electronic tester is bad and "no one services them anymore" but hire an electrician to look at it.

my coworker has a 3 yr old Subaru giving her all sorts of trouble she took to Dealer 3 times and $500 later still doing same thing, she told me what it was doing I went out and started it slow crank but started and ran but would die not restarting at stop lights numerous lights on dash, I told take it back and have them replace battery they gave her 3 printouts that battery tested ok, I put my old load tester on it and it was less than 370 cranking amps. They did replace the battery few days later at dealership and problems all went away.

I have a 2025 Ram and found out it doesn't have a dipstick. The truck has to run 15 minutes after the oil change to check the oil level digitally.

I’ve been having problems for years now trying to get batteries warrantied that are bad when a load is applied but those stupid testers say it’s 78% good or whatever and can’t get a replacement

I just go off CCA. If it’s less than what it’s rated for, the battery is bad. Every good battery always tests above, so it should never be below.
