The song is good and important for the first listen. Its a terrible story of tragedy about how all of the small choices he made lead him to his fate. The devil won that night, he got immediate gratification from the mother and William, and knows he has secured the souls of everyone else there eventually. The events of that night haunt them, literally (he's in the crowd at my shows) and figuratively (they are going, no chance of redemption). The "second character" is the artist, announcing he was there, which from an earlier line means he participated. As for "the devil" through the story, I always read it as William's pride. He wants nothing but to be great, and he didn't care about fame or infamy, he just wanted the pride of being known. The devil whispered to him to make those choices. I didn't know about the Love Story connection, but it makes sense. William loved his "rise to the top" The devil loved the sin of it all, his "crew" loved the free labor from William and the idea of more family, and William's mother did what she did out of love for him, even though it lead to her fate. Finally there's the singer, who uses reference to christianity, which means he has some relationship with it, so he knows what is going to happen, but he knows he "cannot change his fate" so he tells the tale with caution.
