The southern Arabian Peninsula was the location of several significant ancient kingdoms, that influenced trade and politics in the region. Among these kingdoms, Saba and Himyar were the most prominent. The kingdom of Saba emerged in the first millennium BCE, in what is now Yemen. It developed a centralized political structure, with kings who controlled agriculture and trade. The Sabaeans constructed dams and irrigation channels, to support farming in the arid environment. They also controlled trade routes for incense, myrrh, and other goods across Arabia and into Africa and the Mediterranean. Archaeological evidence indicates that Saba had a complex society, with specialized labor, urban settlements, and religious institutions. The Himyarite kingdom succeeded Saba in the late first millennium BCE, and became dominant in southern Arabia. The Himyarites expanded territorial control, and centralized administration. They maintained agricultural production through terraces and irrigation, and controlled important trade networks. The Himyarites adopted elements of the cultures and religions of neighboring regions, and produced inscriptions documenting legal, religious, and economic matters. Both kingdoms left extensive inscriptions, monuments, and archaeological remains.
