It’s ironic because even though Lelouch and Suzaku always wanted the same goal, they spent the series clashing over how to achieve it. Lelouch opposing the system from the outside and Suzaku trying to change it from within. But in the end, during the Zero Requiem, they switch roles: Lelouch becomes the Emperor and changes the system from the inside, while Suzaku takes on the role of Zero and opposes it. This reversal highlights the irony that they ultimately needed each other’s methods to achieve their shared goal.
