I ask my yorkie if I should pick him up. If he want to, he’ll position himself to show that he wants up. if not, he’ll stay where he is or maybe even back up.

My family hates it but I won’t let anyone pick up my small dogs for this very reason! I always say, please just treat them like you would a big dog. I have a command for my dogs if I need to pick them up for safety reasons but that’s it.

Honestly, treat a small dog like a cat. With cats you must listen to their boundaries. When I used to pick up my cat every time I saw her, she would run away from me. When I stopped doing that, she stopped running. She realized that for the most part, I would wait until she came to me.

My dog has a signal for when she wants picked up. She goes to certain spots, sits, and looks at me. I then pick her up and put her where she wants. She’s so chill about it

I pick up my big dogs lol (I give them a heads up and they love cuddles and only two let me, the other two are not down and that’s fine)

As a reactive chi mix owner.. LOUDER!! I absolutely believe that her size impacted her reactivity! And while we’re at it, train your small dogs bc my chi mix is the smartest and absolutely loves to learn and I truly feel it gives her worth!

This is completely fair. Mine does ask to be picked up pretty often but I will work on not doing so unprompted unless there is a safety issue.

my little dog has "pick up spots" he'll only be picked up in specific areas of the house, if he gets an inking I'm wanting to pick him up or just wants to cuddle he goes to one of his spots to get picked up there.

I been saying this and this also a big root of the behavioural issues often found in small dogs ! They require training and adequate exercise and enrichment just as much as big dogs ❤

I’ve taught Boo consent on being picked up. One of my friends picked her up without asking and she was shocked that Boo wouldn’t “talk to her”. She now asks! I do have an emergency pickup and we practice it once a month.

People get IRATE when I don't let them put their hands on my small dog. I'll body block them tho. He's scared of strangers and needs to know I'll keep him safe. I also bring a friendly decoy dog who loves meeting strangers to act as a buffer.
