I work in produce distribution. E. coli issues happen in November and April each year due to the lettuce growing region shift. Any time an influx of temporary laborers enter an industry, mishandling happens. Stay safe and avoid romaine at those times

My first job was as a busser. Watched the waitresses scoop the salads into bowls with their bare hands. Never ate salad from restaurants again.

The sickest I EVER was happened as a result of bagged salad. I lost 11 pounds in three days. Horrific.

My friend worked as a waitress at a somewhat upscale restaurant & she would NEVER order a salad when we went out. She said used to eat a piece of lettuce from the big bowl where servers got customers salads from and she eventually developed a rash around her mouth. Her Dr. couldn’t figure out the cause of the rash. One day she said she walked into the kitchen and saw a cook dump half a wooden salad bowl of a white powder into a sink that was filled w/water and lettuce. She asked what the powder was & he said, “bleach.” He told her it takes the brown out of lettuce when it starts to go bad. She read the container and it said to use 2 tbs of the powder with 5 gallons of water. The sink had less than 5 gals of water in it at the time and he used about 1/2 c of bleach powder. She stopped eating the lettuce immediately and her rash went away.
