Hear me out…people on PTO shouldn’t be checking their email, so why can’t I send my email to get that task off my plate?

My pet peeve: don’t pop into Teams with: “Hi!” and wait for me to respond with hello. Just ask what you need to ask or say what you need to say. Include the greeting AND what you’re messaging me about, please!!

Hi :
Nahhhh emailing someone when on PTO is fine. Thinking you’ll get a response is the issue. The company doesn’t stop because someone is on PTO, but they can respond when they’re back.

I’m going to respectfully disagree with #3. If I send it while they’re on PTO I don’t expect a response until they return. If you’re on PTO it’s your responsibility to enjoy it, why are you checking emails?

I disagree with #3. Given my job, I have no way of knowing who is on PTO at any given time. Send the email. They send an “out of office” response. Then I know they are out of office. They do not need to read/respond when they are on PTO.

I have a coworker that walks over to my office to let me know he’s emailed me

It’s totally fine to email people on vacation, so long as it’s assumed that a reply isn’t expected until they’re back

I respectfully half disagree with #5, i think that depends on the other party. If i email a coworker at 9am Monday and have no response still on Wednesday, even just a “hey looking into this but it’s gonna take time” would be sufficient, then i will be emailing asking if they got the original email. I have so may coworkers who have ignored emails and i had to email multiple times and CC their supervisor to get the info needed. So yes don’t pester but also like, if they’re not replying in a timely fashion i think pestering is okay.

I send the email so I won’t forget/it’s done BUT I schedule send it so it won’t arrive until after they’re back in office (whether it’s just after hours or they’re on PTO). It’s such a simple way to get your work done while not demanding others keep the same hours.

Number three should be DONT CHECK EMAILS ON VACATION. I’ll continue to send an email and that person can respond to it when they get back.

All the rest I agree with. Why email when someone's on PTO?? As a CO-WORKER I'm not holding what should go to that person on PTO. Absolutely sending that email to them whether on PTO or not. I'f THEY log in during PTO thats on them.

Personal pet peeve—signing in to a Zoom meeting a couple minutes early but the meeting owner/Zoom gods don’t let you in until *after* the start time!

Number 3, I totally understand sending it while I’m gone. You’ll see my OOO. However, do NOT ask me about your email 18 minutes into my day on the first the day I come back. GIVE TIME TO REPLY. If it was super urgent, I listed a backup. Stop it.

I don't know how common this is, but where I work there are multiple people who will send an email, and then immediately walk over, ask if you got the email and then tell you everything in the email. Drives me insane

I personally don’t care how many emails you send me when I’m on my PTO. That’s why my OOO states I’ll get back to you upon my return once I prioritize what’s there. 🤷🏽♀️

Also, before you add me to a meeting, or call wanting a half hour convo, teams me and ask if I have time now. Just because I’m “available” doesn’t mean I have the time/resources I need right now.

Checking calendars!! Teams/outlook even has a scheduling assistant so you can find time where everyone is available! My manager refuses to use this then gets mad at us when we decline meetings 🙄

I agree with all except #3. nobody should be checking/responding to emails off hours but sending them should be ok so that the can be addressed when back to work

Hard disagree with 3, but I love you and usually agree with everything you say. If you're on PTO, don't check your email. I'm not on PTO and need to "get it off my desk." #lavenderhaze 👑

Emailing while someone is on PTO? Why wouldn't you? I don't expect email to be answered right away and I always thought of it as a way to keep them informed of what happened when they got back.

Disagree with #3. I'll forget if I don't send it. You shouldn't be checking your email while on PTO anyway.

I have a boss that you HAVE to message him after putting in a request or anything of the sort because he doesn't check his emails. No one else seems to have that issue. 🙃 (It's because all he does is watch videos all day)
