As a career shifter, I took ccna to go straight to networking and skip support roles. You got this, ms maem.

Instead of support roles another entry position I feel like gets over looked is positions at data centers if you live near them they are always hiring techs and gets you familiar with networking and the physical side

When I worked helpdesk, I went over and beyond in my duty, I’d put in 16h days to plan and structure stuff. Now lead cyber engineer, no certs but man did I work hard, and still do:)

its your employer not the industry. as a cyber security mentor at a community College I will tell you the same thing i tell my students. find a better job. its hard, but keep the one you have now until you have a job offer in hand.

As someone who did 22 months in the helpdesk & just got promoted to sys admin. I hustled every single day. Asking to learn more, spending more time trying to resolve tickets instead of escalating, reaching out to the people in the escalation path to find out what they did to resolve it. My tickets & documentation were always extremely clear & precise. Asked to shadow people in roles I was interested in. I was consistently a top performer across all my metrics. Pretty much, I had a plan of attack as soon as I got in the role….

i would say get ur certs and do homelabs. To get out of helpdesk unfortunately its a battle that requires time outside of work.

Help desk can be a solid starting point, but learning networking and documenting real troubleshooting experience is what helps you move beyond it.

are you going for software development? if that's the case you may need to wait for the AI bubble to burst, as there is not much work at all that isn't AI focused, and every job easily has 1000+ applicants because of the million+ laid off.

- question.. did you get certified prior to landing your first IT help desk role, or other way around? how long did you have to review/study for before taking ur net+ exam? do u have background in IT or did you learn on the job and/or ur IT course? 🤔

Kaya I took the development route, ayaw ko talaga mag IT Support/ Helpdesk 😅 imo, parang wala talagang growth sa role na yan kasi mostly inquiries na paulit-ulit nalang but sa development, ang daming nageemerge like AI Tools for Healthcare, Robotics, Machine Learning etc. 🙏

depending on the company it's better to look for a promotion outside of that company. some get victims of their own success especially in smaller companies. why promote a good performing help desk tech if he/she outperforms everyone and lifts up the whole department? it's a sad truth with bad managers

Build projects/labs that are directly transferable to the IT field you want to go in to. I started in support and a couple years of that + solid project work (0 certs btw) was enough to get an OffSec role in the UK, and things only went up from there. Definitely some luck involved though, do some cringy linkedin networking or ask for project reviews directly can help too
