I have experienced this and have also put my number 1 in second position during presentations because of the natural inclination of clients to go with 2. 😂 This has worked when I really had my heart in a specific logo design concept that I wanted my client to choose.

Relatable 😩😂 ...my say (for the people saying they used 10 minutes to do the second design); I feel making something from scratch (non-existence) is a whole TASK, but when it's been rejected, unconsciously, you would make the second in seconds using the idea of the first (making it look like it's another direction of idea not knowing that it's your subconsciousness of the previous/first one at work) Somehow, when you show the first work and it gets rejected, you already know exactly what the client might have been trying to pass all along 😩 It's all ❤️&💡
