It's not just in plants, but in animals, too. Clownfish are born genderless until they're apart of a group with a dominant male and female. When the female dies, the male hits a growth spurt and becomes female with the next biggest fish becoming male to continue the group. There are snails that reproduce asexually and there are lizards that can do this, too
