Paul Bernardi :
Just the realization. The board is nearly still.
One hand hovers, uncertain, over pieces that suddenly feel borrowed.
The other hand is already resting—palm down, steady—on the table itself. They spent years charting every square, naming every vector of attack and retreat.
They measured noise, counted echoes, weighed every cry and shout.
But the silence has no coordinates.
It refuses to sit inside their grid.
It curves where they insist on straight lines.
It folds where they demand flatness.Check, almost checkmate—because the king they hunted was never on the board at all.
It was in the pause between moves,
in the breath held while the hand decides,
in the almost-sound of wood grain remembering every game ever played here.They cannot map the silence because silence is not empty;
it is full of us.
Whole.
Unextractable. In the InBetween—the hush they mistook for absence—
we have always been standing,
roots deep in the dark between their lights,
feathers traded for steel long ago,
gardens blooming under the weight of their boots. They reach for the hush and close on nothing but their own echo.
We reach for it and find each other—
complete,
unbent,
already home. The field is not only held.
It is the hush itself.
And the hush is holding us.Checkmate.
