If you only want to get married because of parental pressure, please don’t do it at all. But if you genuinely want to get married, there’s nothing wrong with saying ‘shit or get off the pot’ imo. If your timelines don’t match up and you don’t want to be dragged along for years, it’s better to leave now than later

I feel like the issue here is that by saying 'I want to be engaged by the end of the year' you are kind of almost suggesting that it is marriage or nothing. Your setting almost an end date to your relationship. it is important to discuss your wants and desires with your partner (I've spoken several times with my partner about how I want to get married and roughly when we think we will etc) but it feels very "this or else" which might be why he is then upset over it

Couldn’t agree more. It needs to be a fluid conversation and forget the pressure from outsiders. Grad school is a lot and planning a wedding is a lot.

My husband and I were together 12 years when he proposed 2 days after our anniversary. We met when I was 18 and I was pretty clear from the beginning that I wanted to wait to get married until we were combining assets for a future home and child. Covid may have delayed us a couple years but we weren’t ready for kids anyway so we waited. The longevity of our relationship is just as impressive having “just” been dating and it would be if we were married all that time. It’s an ever flowing conversation about your life goals and what you want to achieve together.

I told my husband before he was my boyfriend …. I’m not dating anyone who’s not going to marry me . Period point blank . He didn’t have to date me , just like I didn’t have to settle for being JUST a GF . Context we were friends before we dated

I gave my husband a time frame because he wanted to make our rings. we already planned our wedding deposit down, invites out, and then a month before our wedding he proposed in the most beautiful way for us. But we talked about marriage and a timeline for a few years.

Definitely needs to be a conversation between you two. If you allow your families to push or influence getting married, the next one could be questions on careers, or moving or babies… do it first you two, not your families.
