This is the Four Seasons Private Residences in San Francisco. Two units converted into one, redesigned from the sightlines out. Oak frames every view to combat the north-facing views to create the warm, continuous base that allows the stone to read as punctuation rather than wallpaper. The cantilevered island is a structural statement. The sculptural stools introduce weight at the base of the room, juxtaposing the visual weight of the other materials. The finishes differentiate without breaking the whole. Each room has its own character, weight, and moment. The floor plan was generous in size, but the layout created isolated rooms rather than a connected home. Sightlines were blocked. The kitchen read as separate from everything around it. There was no sense of arrival and no moment that told you where you were. We restructured the experience starting from the entry point. The wine display at the threshold was the first decision, something that immediately told you this was a home built around living well. From there, light oak millwork became the connective tissue that carried you through every space without ever announcing itself. The material does its job quietly so the stone can do its job loudly. The Marble on the island and backsplash was chosen for its movement. The veining reads differently depending on where you are standing and what the light is doing, which means the kitchen is never the same room twice. A statement island was the one non-negotiable. The brief was to make it feel unreal, something the eye reads as sculptural and considered before it registers as stone. The cantilevered edge does exactly that. Rigid structure in tension with a surface that looks like it is still moving. Design: @phoenixgreydesign Build: Gartan Construction Photography: @briankitts Florals: @misterleedesigns
