New follower from Australia, you're one of the first people who is spot on about breed specific traits. I have had two blue healers a Rottweiler and a boxer, and everything you said is true. A few years ago I rescued a Red setter and I would love to hear your opinion on them.

We're benched next to a breeder of several champion flat coats. The dogs were amazing but the breeders spoke about the cancer rate and how there are not many lines without it. I would love a FCR but probably won't just because of this. Hopefully with scientific advancements in breeding knowledge, they can breed the cancer out.

Flat coats are so pretty and great but they almost all die of histiocytic sarcoma at a relatively young age (7-10) and I think that’s why they’ve lost popularity

Flatties are beautiful but I believe cancer is even more prevalent in their lines than in goldens, plus they are more athletic/active than the already active golden. I would not think of a FCR as a clear alternative to a golden.

They sounds a lot like my red golden. Turns out there’s a bit of an energy difference between show goldens and field goldens. 😅 Haha, my guy is higher energy than I expected, but I wouldn’t have him any other way. 😊

I got so lucky with my dog who is half flat coated retriever. That side of him is my favorite part! So biddable, so sweet, so funny and so happy Best and most incredible dog I've ever had
