@shelbeandthephd: It is so easy for us to undersell ourselves and count ourselves out before we even try. I wouldn’t have accomplished even HALF of the things I’ve accomplished today if I considered the likelihood of me succeeding. If you have big goals you want to achieve - ignore the odds. Plot your way to success and be relentless! #phdstudent #student #gradschool #advice #goals

0 research experience, I applied to 1 PhD program and I got in. I always ignore odds and I’m also okay with getting told no & trying again!

I applied to Google online with no referral or connection and got hired. The statistical odds of that are literally around 0.1-0.2%. I proceeded to have a lucrative 5 year career there. Yeah I’m with you I don’t care about odds

I don’t know you, but I am PROUD of you! My husband and I just did an experiment on ChatGPT where we shared key parts of our respective backgrounds and asked for a statistical probability that we’d make it to where we are today. I’m at .02% and he got .003%. We may not have made it had we known those stats before starting the journey, so I really appreciate this message!

When I was applying to MFA programs, my grandmother said you keep saying that the acceptance rate is less than 5% but somebody has to be the 5% and one of those somebody's could be you. She was right.

Was JUST trying to explain this to my friend. She’s obsessed with comparing herself and looking at the statistics and I’m like girl, focus on yourself!

I love this! I live by a similar motto of “the worst that can happen is they say no.” You never know what opportunities are behind that thing you think you’re not in the odds to get accepted for!

Every successful person I’ve known that told me their story of how they got to where they were, can be summarized as: “I was delusional, I had no idea it was so hard when I started. I wouldn’t have even started if I wasn’t delusional”

I applied for a position at the beginning of my career that required a degree as a college sophomore with 2 months in my field. They brought me in to interview on accident because they didn’t fully read my resume and thought I graduated already. They loved me so much they brought me in as a temp as a test then 3 months later I was hired permanently. That kicked off a career I am 6 years deep into now (with my degree lol)

A) I’m really glad this is real advice and not another undisclosed AI ad from someone who is probably not actually in a PhD program B) sometimes it really pays to do things for the plot, especially in grad school. This will be my second year teaching a course I designed based on my research, and I’m currently taking a seminar on explosives engineering just for shits and giggles, despite being a social scientist.
