I think acting emotionally to challenges isn’t a great way necessarily of gauging intelligence. For instance I’ve seen lgbt minority groups react emotionally to people challenging their right to exist in public for example. It’s perfectly reasonable to express being angry at someone for challenging your rights. But many people might take that to mean, well they don’t actually disagree or understand the conversation, even though the opposite is the case.
