It really depends on what he wants to do as a career. A 'professional' job will still require it. If it is a trade/blue collar/specialized job, then trade school is the best. Most colleges are doing their due diligence with AI; when to use it, when to not, how to use it or not. I'd mostly ignore AI in Your decisions about this unless he wants to be an artist, photographer, or graphic designer. It wouldn't hurt to at least have him go for a year, and see how he feels about since they want to pay for it for him. If he decides it is not for him then You can support him extracting from it. I work at a University and I think about 40% of them should not be there gathering the enormous debt...especially for what they want to do. Don't stress it too much though. AI is not really affecting Higher Ed though...just certain careers. 🤘🏽💜

My son is getting close to this decision as well. I was pushing him towards the trades until I spent time working towards an apprenticeship for the last year and a half. More shops are toxic work environments and in Ontario at least the skilled trades program is bullshit. I worked for over a year and have zero hours to show for it. Employers exploit apprenticeships as a way to have cheap labour and withhold signing off on hours. So unless you really love the trade it’s not worth all the shit an apprentice is put through. Before anyone gets the idea that I think I’m above pushing a broom, I’m a hard worker and my mindset is I’m trading time for money I don’t care how shitty the task is. I’m there 9 hours a day either way. It was really the bullying, and toxic masculinity that makes a lot of these places unsafe work environments.

My youngest son is also 17. We are having the same conversation here in the HRM. 🤣 My oldest son graduated high school last year. He took a gap year and then wants to get into the electrical trade. My youngest son has decided to go to Dal and wants to be an engineer. I believe any education is valuable. And while we had many conversations about the pros and cons of both university and community college, they ultimately made the correct choice for themselves. It is definitely an emotional time, you are a great mom and I know your son will choose whatever is best for him. Good luck my love! Sending you so much love. 💖💖💖💖

Trade school is the way to go. Unless he wants to get a professional degree or a four year degree where he can make some money (engineering or the like), trades are always needed.

My daughter also graduates in June. Because she wasn't 100% sure what she wants to do in the future she's chosen to go to NSCC, and researched some programs she was interested in and what programs won't be taken over by AI. It's also a much cheaper option than university and if she decides she hates it, it's not 20 grand a year down the toilet.

Look at how much electricians, plumbers, welders make and forget about the expectations of status that is associated with university. As a long term plan, after you apprentice and work the job, you look at starting your own company. ✌

the best thing to think about is, what kind of job does he want to do and is that a job that’s projected to be hiring in the future? Is he good with his hands? Trades are a fair bit harder for AI to hurt.

the nova scotia works school liaison has a program called “my blue print” and her job is to help kids out with these types of things! his school has one :)

the concept of an "informational interview" was the biggest thing for me when thinking about career moves. This is when you reach out to HR reps/hiring managers/ recruiters/ anybody in charge of hiring in any professional area you're interested in. You could find somebody like that in landscaping for a start and see what their thoughts are on their career and whether it would be a good fit for a young professional like your son

My 21 year old waited 2 years to go to a college program and will be bridging into a uni program. But I encouraged her not to apply to post secondary if she didn’t feel like she had a clear heading. Someone commented about “what’d he like to do when he was a kid” and we also took that route. She got a job doing a thing she loved when she was a tiny human, and then we mind mapped how to make it a career. I’m in uni now for a second career, and while I’m loving the info and insight, it’s not the be all, to end all. I’m glad I’m going with lived experience and I’m glad she didn’t just go bc of societal pressures. I’m all for higher ed, but I’m also for purposeful, meaningful, well lived lives. depends on the professors, im in 3rd year of s 4 yr degree, some professors are very anti AI, but others are not just pro AI, some are using it to grade papers. its causing a rift. . as for valuable, i guess it also depends on the job, i cannot legally do mine without this piece of paper.

I’m in this world a year from now. University gives big world ideas. Trade school gets quick paychecks. Trying to find what my kid can do to pay the bills and work towards his dream job.

my son was definitely more Tech and then blue collar. he graduated during covid, so not much available in the way of guidance from schools. he ended up applying to nscc for cybersecurity. he is also smart smart. he knew he didn't want to go to university though, his father and I both went for a really long time and his ADHD wasn't pushing him in that direction haha he's graduating next semester and he will have a job right away, a well paying one. so if he's into tech, Maybe see if he can explore that. it's going to be the thing that keeps AI in check I think. there are so many directions to go with it. He did a work term spot with an anti trafficking organization and really enjoyed it.
