I visited Mama Pebbles again today, and seeing her with her babies was both beautiful and devastating. She and her puppies were up at the front of the kennel — the babies plump, curious, and clearly thriving because of her. They climb over her, press into her, and adore their mama with the kind of trust only babies have. Watching them, you would never guess the cost it’s taking on her body. Mama Pebbles herself is still in awful condition. She is extremely emaciated — hips and spine visible, her frame shrinking more by the day. You can see it clearly: she is giving everything she has to keep her babies alive, and there is almost nothing left of her to give. Each day she waits, she gets thinner. Each day, she withers a little more. It does not feel like there is any intervention happening that matches how urgent her condition truly is. She is still eating. She is still drinking. She is still nursing her babies — but she cannot keep this up much longer. Mama Pebbles needs out before she becomes too sick to recover.
