It’s really not an entirely new phenomenon. We used to scroll through radio stations to find the music we wanted to hear. There’s nothing stopping anyone from devoting their focus to listening to an album straight through or over and over, other than willpower to resist the tempting distractions (which are many.) Personally I’m not someone who is listening to music all day—I listen to local radio stations when I’m in the car, but otherwise it’s not really a background. When I specifically want to listen to music the format makes some difference—I’ve been liking cassettes recently, and I listen to vinyl occasionally, but I play music on Apple Music more often due to the ease and because I want to discover something new.

What an incredible observation. So true. It’s tough balance in these times. The first step is being aware. And slowing down and pausing before flipping and making the conscious decision based on your values and what feels right to you in the moment. Knowing what I know about you I trust your values and interest. Let’s keep this conversation going. It’s more and more relevant everything will be moving faster and faster and the access to content grows exponentially.

as an American, i believe we'll have to clamor our way out of this socially destructive capitalist fascism we're living through in order to find time to find peace to listen to music.
I find time, but im 40, and music is a key part of my life. I love what you do 🫡🤝✨️

I completely agree with you,
the perception we have towards music has been so altered into a way which makes it much more of a collection piece than something you actually care about,
Music isn't meant to be treated like an accessory to brag about and especially not to shame other people for their listening habits.
I do think that this new perception originates from modern capitalism and how companies like Spotify glorify artists to only be "the song of the summer"

On the flip side: making music has also become just as easy as accessing it. This lowered barrier of entry means more people making less passionate music. It’s easy to skip songs that the artists didn’t even put much effort into.

Ever since I got an mp3 and buying/owning CDs, downloading them on it one by one and always searching for new CDs, this problem for me completely disappeared. I think owning physical media contributes a lot to this

you are so right, I also feel like I should do content like it's because I have listened to shit for 20 years straight at this point but deadass I do not want to the value of the artist to be a collectathon like has been, esp with shit like jazz where casiopeia isn't even an album it's a vibe at this point. it's important to Introduce people to this stuff but it's not to be disregarded like most art is today

so many opinions on music seem to be a way for people to seperate themselves from others, rather than just simply enjoying something. I’ve made music for a long time because its what I want to hear, simple as that

life is short and there is so much music. there will always be a balance between finding and collecting music and saving your time and attention for the pieces of music that matter the most.

Ai is making this worse too, I already hear it at department stores. Using ai music in commercial settings will start to normalize the complete commodification of music and it’s fucked

Bro make a radio, music someone else plays you cannot skip, you cannot ignore, it's like being at a concert at home, and you can really put some heat on the Playlists, and add voice messages before each/some albums, hit me up we can set something up together

Really feels like personal discipline will just be more valued. It’s on us as individuals to correct behavior we all agree is negative.

I keep thinking of my old cds. I miss old jukeboxes. Now they are electronic and you can have it all. We have too much.

That’s why I almost exclusively listen to physical media. All of my albums are intentionally picked by me and listened to in full at least once a week

what if we only have "Perfect songs" in each playlist, like it doesn't matter about no albums or artists but just the individual pieces that people like?
