@sacramentourbanmedia916: Aldrich Ames, a CIA counterintelligence officer who secretly passed U.S. intelligence to the Soviet Union and later Russia, has died, a spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons confirmed. Ames died Monday at the Federal Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland. He was 84 and was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. During his 31-year career with the CIA, Ames caused devastating damage to U.S. intelligence efforts. Authorities believe he exposed more than 100 operations and was responsible for identifying numerous Soviet agents, many of whom were imprisoned or executed. In exchange for the classified information, Ames received large sums of money that financed an extravagant lifestyle. After pleading guilty, Ames acknowledged betraying nearly every Soviet agent known to him who was working with the CIA or allied intelligence services. He also admitted providing the Soviet Union and Russia with extensive intelligence regarding U.S. foreign policy, defense strategies, and national security. According to the Defense Department, he revealed the identities of 10 agents, at least nine of whom were later executed. Despite multiple warning signs—including failed or deceptive polygraph results, unexplained financial gains, declining job performance, alcohol abuse, and other behavioral issues—Ames continued to receive promotions and access to highly sensitive information, as the CIA failed to act on the repeated red flags throughout his career.#fyp #viral
