Sometimes my 4Runner low range still feels too fast for really steep declines. Makes me miss my old manual YJ sometimes

Go down in the same gear u went uphill / for automatic cars use the downhill options ( ordinary brakes aren’t to be trusted in long downward slopes

Top advice. This is basic stuff. Stops the wheels locking up which they might under braking and keeps steering, sideways and forwards grip. Same technique whenever sand mud or rocks. Can’t believe some of the comments “ just use the brakes “ etc. it’s the whole point of low ratio gears. It won’t knacker the engine or the gearbox…. With experience, feathering the brakes to go even slower than first gear low ratio allows, maybe for a large boulder or steep step for example , (depends on the vehicle’s ability and gearing) is fine of course. Folk would be best to know safe off roading skills before commenting unsafe nonsense. Post is correct.
