Take it out of the chart under your name and I’ll give them contrast then.

as a 12 year CT technologist, im not risking my patient or my career over a potential allergy. If the charts says history of allergy non anaphylaxis, then they get premedicated. If history of anaphylaxis then absolutely no contrast. Doctors should learn to diagnose with full body scans on every patient who walks in the door.

Then make sure you go to CT with your patient so you are there for the code that follows the injection!

Somebody teach this to my rad techs so they don’t make me call a radiologist to get approval when I order trauma CTA’s on a pt with a listed allergy

As a nurse, I'd recommend you use less medical jargon. "You are having a reaction to other components in the iodine prep but not the iodine mineral itself, because your body needs that mineral to function."

Working in the ER for 11 years has taught me most people don’t understand what a true allergy is anyway. Intolerances and side effects at best for 99% of things. I dead ass had a patient tell me they were allergic to the color purple. I was like “purple dye” ? No. The color. Seeing it in a room, it touching them. I was like ok that’s it. I’ve seen it all lol

CT Specialist here, you are correct! Allergies should be listed as “IV iodinated contrast” not just “iodine.”

There is also absolutely no correlation between shellfish allergy and iodine-containing contrast medium reactions. 😑😑😑

You’re also comparing ingesting iodine to injecting iodinated contrast. So that’s weird

Do these details matter to the common person though? They have a reaction either way, and it’s important to note for contrast studies. I feel like this information just ends up confusing most people who aren’t medical professionals.

@TriPosseChick: As a CT Tech of 27 years, you are correct they are not allergic to iodine because that is what it’s produced in your body. But they could be allergic iodonated contrast & are allergic to the other chemicals and components that make up the contrast. Their allergy should be listed as iodinated contrast allergy, not iodine. We always have to verify with the patient whether it is contrast or something else that they are allergic to when we see that on their chart.
