Ah dude great idea. I can just see there being two characters one that was stuck in the propaganda and loyalty to the empire and the other that is slowly but surely waking up to the reality. The second character is trying to figure things out and even talk to his empire loyalist friend and figure things out. By the beginning of the final battle 2nd friend has been completely disillusioned. He is trying to wake up the first guy but he is stubborn. It just doesn’t click until it’s too late. The loyal soldier loses hope as he realizes his entire life is a lie while the second guy is trying his damnedest to save himself and his friend. They make it to the hanger of the only to see Luke fly the last ship out and they go down with the Death Star.

A big thing is to have some of them have family on alderan when it is destroyed. See how they get caught up in the "I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING"fervor. And like as you said some make it to the end some don't. Would make the ending so much more tragic as one of them goes down on the surface staring up at the Death Star hoping at least this time someone makes it out alive
