I’ll tell you something I learned and wanted to share. Every high-level career costs something. Medicine is no different. A missed birthday isn’t a tragedy if you show up fully the next day, the next week, the next moment. Life is bigger than a calendar…mindset decides whether this career breaks you or builds you.

whether you take the MD path or not. You will lose all that is said. I started MedSchool at 33 and won't be done training until my 40s and all I could think about is how I would not be capable to support my immigrant parents when they retire.

it’s okay to feel that way and grieve the sacrifices you had to make, that’s not an easy thing to do. buuuut i hope you can try to make the best of it. i promise im trying not to sound minimizing here (so im sorry if it’s coming off that way!) but i really do hope it gets better and you have a way better birthday than you’re anticipating. happy early birthday stranger, and im proud of all you’ve accomplished :)

I am a 2nd year med student at 32. I wish I’d been able to do med straight out of school. Instead I was dealing with severe mental illness in and out of hospital, not well enough to earn anything, taking years to get the right cocktail of meds right to reach stability. That is actually losing your 20s. I am so jealous of the ppl in my med school who have had that dream smooth pathway where they get straight in out of high school.
