lol, one of my professors admitted that our class was 8.00 because she had to drop her kids off to school in the morning therefore she was already out so might as well go to work and the class out of the way.

With the exception of one professor, the entire chemistry department at my school were not morning people. There was only one class per semester offered before 10:30 AM. The biology department, unfortunately, loved mornings. 8 and 8:30 AM classes, 7:50 AM labs. Lost my boot in the snow walking to microbiology lab one morning because they hadn’t finished clearing the sidewalks yet since no other department had anything scheduled before 8:30 that morning.

i know at my university the professor didn't get to pick the times cuz the one 8 am i had the professor said something at some point about finding out the class was at 8 am and how she couldn't do anything about it

As a professor, I don’t have any say over when my classes are scheduled. We may request general scheduling considerations (say for child care or health accommodations), but otherwise our department admin just gives us a schedule and we roll with it.

i think my uni is weird bc the professors dont choose. they get assingned a schedule like the rest of us. the number of times i've heard prof complaining that they dont want to be here at 8 am or 8 pm is wild😅

do you know how they schedule classes with TAs? i have friends who are TAs and they have no say in what their schedules are like but also don’t know how it’s being scheduled😅

I didn't know this until I became a professor! All my classes are late afternoon or evening and 2.5 hours long. It's a daily marathon!

Enrollment trends also guide our scheduling. I wish it were just our preferences. As a department chair, there are many elements that affect the schedule.

the institution also has to factor when rooms are available, among other factors. I was surprised when I found out how complicated it can be!

don't for certain degrees all professors kind of have to work together, because if a freshman has to take class A, B, C and D their first semester wouldn't they all need to be compatible? does this question make sense? is that something you ever have to take account for?

Not all universities / colleges allow the profs to choose the time or days. Thats actually not common, especially at smaller schools.

I was a department chair and we thought about students first in scheduling. I wanted students who had 3 major courses in my department to be able to do that back to back to back. I am at a good sized public U so we might have 8 sections of a single course and it was easy to accommodate most professor's preferences.

In my department, the faculty have very little choice in when the classes are scheduled. We have to coordinate with two other departments in order for courses that are often taken together are not in conflict (this goes for several of their prerequisites as well).

Classroom availability also drives the schedules. we balance between when we want to do it, when rooms are open, and avoiding conflicting classes that our students may be trying to do at the same time.
