Frankie was labeled “aggressive.” In reality, he was absolutely terrified. When Frankie came to the shelter, he was fearful, matted, and underweight. When people approached him, barked, growled, showed his teeth, not out of malice, but out of panic. His fear was so overwhelming that he would pee, defecate himself, cower in the corner, and tremble uncontrollably. He was going to be put down because he was scared. Not mean. Not dangerous. Not broken. He was drowning in fear. Just a dog who had already been failed by humans too many times to know how to trust them again. When Shoshi called us, she said she couldn’t leave him at the shelter. She knew, deep down, how special he was and she knew that if he stayed there, he wouldn’t make it out alive. So we said yes. We agreed to foster him. There were days in the beginning when just talking too loud or laughing would send Frankie running. He would hide under the table or disappear beneath the bed, shaking, bracing for pain that never came. And it broke our hearts. Because no dog should live believing that laughter means danger. No dog should think hands are meant to hurt. Watching him hide was a quiet devastation, proof of how deeply he had been wounded before us. So we showed him, over and over again, that hands are for healing, not hurting. That voices don’t have to be feared. That he was safe. The first time Frankie was adopted, we thought his story had found its happy ending. But it didn’t last. He tried so hard to find a home. And he came back. Again. And again. Each return took something from him. Every time Frankie left, he was telling us the same thing: This isn’t my place. I don’t belong with them. The first time he came back to us, he was completely shut down. His light was gone. It took months to bring him back, months to rebuild his confidence, his joy, his trust. Months to remind him that humans could be safe. That love didn’t always disappear. After more than a year together, we finally understood something that had been quietly unfolding all along.
