The story begins in the Book of Job. One day, Satan appeared before God and accused a righteous man named Job. Satan claimed that Job only served God because his life was comfortable and blessed. To prove otherwise, God permitted Satan to test Job. Job lost his wealth. He lost his children. He suffered terrible afflictions. Yet through it all, he struggled, questioned, and grieved, but he did not abandon God. By the end of the story, Satan's accusation was exposed as false. Job's faith endured, and God's justice was revealed. This story raises a question many Christians have asked: If God is all-powerful, why doesn't He simply destroy Satan right now? After all, Satan is the source of temptation, deception, and much suffering in the world. Why allow him to continue? First, Satan Is a Defeated Enemy, Even Though His Final Judgment Has Not Yet Been Fully Executed. Many people imagine that Satan and God are locked in an equal struggle. The Bible teaches no such thing. Jesus already defeated Satan through His death and Resurrection. At Calvary, Christ won the decisive victory. Satan still operates in the world, but his ultimate defeat is certain. Second, God Allows Human Freedom. God created angels and human beings with free will. Satan freely chose to rebel against God. Human beings are also free to choose whether they will f0ll0w God or reject Him. If God immediately removed every possibility of temptation, human freedom would be profoundly altered. Part of our earthly journey involves freely choosing God amid real alternatives. Third, God Can Bring Good Even Out of Evil. This does not mean evil is good. It is not. But God is so powerful that He can draw good from even the actions of Satan. The story of Job demonstrates this. The story of Joseph being sold into slavery demonstrates this. Most importantly, the Crucifixion demonstrates this. What Satan intended for evil, God transformed into the salvation of the world. Fourth, The Present Age Is a Time of Mercy. The Bible reveals that history is moving toward a final judgment. God is still giving people time to repent, convert, and return to Him. The Lord's patience is not weakness. It is mercy. As long as history continues, God continues calling sinners to salvation. Fifth, Satan's Final Defeat Is Already Promised. The Bible does not end with Satan victorious. It ends with Satan judged. In the Book of Revelation, Satan is finally cast down forever. God's kingdom triumphs completely. The question is not whether Satan will be defeated. The question is when God's plan for history will reach its fulfillment. Finally, God does not destroy Satan immediately because He permits a period in which human freedom, repentance, spiritual growth, and His plan of salvation unfold. Satan is not equal to God and is not ultimately victorious. Through Christ's death and Resurrection, Satan has already been defeated, and Scripture promises his final judgment at the end of time. In simple words, God could destroy Satan instantly if He chose to. However, He allows history to continue because He is carrying out a greater plan that respects human freedom and offers mercy to sinners. Satan's defeat is already assured through Jesus Christ. What remains is the final fulfillment of God's victory when Christ returns. Now you know.
