@markwilmson: They ask because they want to base your future salary on your current salary. They should tell you what the position is paying. I always say "that will depend on further exploration of the role and expectations that wont be available until we interview further. However, I dont want us to waste each other's time so, would you share the range so we can be sure we're on target?" Has never failed me.

How about an ONLINE APPLICATION that ask that question and it gives you ranges to choose from and you CAN NOT proceed to the next part of the application UNLESS you make a selection of the ranges that was set?

That question can set the tone for the whole interview. It’s less about naming a number and more about showing you understand your value and the role. Preparing that response ahead of time makes a big difference. Tools like ntro.io can help you think through compensation conversations and walk in more confident.

Thank you for sharing this. I have been stuck with this question before and one mistake. I’ve done was given them my hourly rate for my previous employer for example well on my last employer, I used to make $37 an hour so then they turned around and offered me $37.50 so I kind of stepped my own toe

Some don't share their package if you ask them, others even refuse when you tell them a range they want you to be specific.
