Just use linux, #opsec #cybersecurity #linux #windows #gdid @T1een @ The capture of Peter Stokes, an alleged member of the "Scattered Spider" cybercrime group, was significantly aided by a Global Device ID (GDID)—a unique identifier tied to his Microsoft Windows installation. Despite Stokes' attempts to hide his identity using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), the GDID acted as a persistent digital "fingerprint" that allowed investigators to track his activities across multiple platforms and locations. How the GDID Led to His Identification Persistent Tracking: When Stokes set up an account with a secure-tunneling service (ngrok) to facilitate a data breach at a luxury jewelry retailer, he accessed it through a VPN to mask his IP address. However, the Windows machine he used continued to transmit its unique GDID. Device-to-Account Correlation: Microsoft provided the FBI with telemetry data, including the GDID, following a court order. Investigators found that this specific GDID was linked to an IP address used during the breach. Wider Pattern Analysis: By analyzing the history of that specific GDID, the FBI discovered it had been used to log into Stokes’ personal accounts—including Snapchat, Facebook, and Apple—at times and locations that matched the cyberattack timelines. Corroborating Evidence: The FBI cross-referenced the GDID activity with social media posts. Stokes had posted photos on his Snapchat account showing himself in various locations (such as Thailand and New York) during the same timeframes that his device was being used to conduct intrusions. The IP addresses used for his personal social media logins frequently matched those associated with the GDID during the attacks. What is a GDID? A Global Device ID (GDID) is a persistent, unique identifier generated by Microsoft for Windows installations. It is typically used for: Diagnostic and crash reporting: Helping Microsoft identify systemic issues. Feature-usage analysis: Tracking how software is being used. Security and Anti-Abuse: Detecting patterns like one device repeatedly claiming "free trials" or using compromised credentials across multiple accounts. Because the identifier is tied to the hardware/OS level, it often remains consistent even if a user attempts to change their digital "location" via a VPN. This allowed law enforcement to "pierce" the anonymity the VPN was intended to provide, ultimately linking the criminal activity directly to Stokes' personal digital footprint. Stokes was arrested in April 2026 at a Finnish airport while attempting to board a flight to Japan and was subsequently extradited to the United States to face federal charges, including conspiracy, computer intrusion, and wire fraud.
