As an Irish American (2nd gen) i don’t get why Irish Americans feel anything but solidarity with oppressed minorities. Any good Irishman fights for the freedom of the oppressed because we see our suffering in their suffering. Never again means never again, not “uhh no we totally had it as bad so I’m free to treat you however I want”

my Irish Catholic grandparents (yes all 4) were young children when their families immigrated in the 1920 and while they certainly didn't own slaves they also hugely benefitted from white supremacy in America. while the British were absolutely oppressors in Ireland well into the 1990s it's not comparable AT ALL to chattle slavery.

Again I always ask how if Irish people had it as bad as black people in America, how come they know they are Irish? I’m black but my family has no tie to our culture pre America because it was beaten out of us

On top of that, I HATE when folks try to use this as a way to invalidate people talking about descendants of American Chattel Slavery. THE IRISH WERE INVOLVED IN INDETURED SERVITUDE, NOT CHATTEL SLAVERY. THESE ARE NOT THE SAME THING!!!!! 🫠

I remember seeing an African American talking about their last name being Irish and someone in the replies was trying to lecture them on how oppressed Irish people were and how they were victims not space owners.

knew a guy whose grandpa made a family genealogy book that said their slaves were happy, they were wholly unnamed & listed as property, but his 2 relatives who were indentured servants were named and had thier journeys discussed. Also multiple of his relatives moved to Texas to keep their slaves after the civil war. He still tried to argue his ancestors were slaves, despite his own family book illustrating otherwise.

Let’s just say I have Irish ancestry too. A LOT more than I thought it would be and it’s the same amount as British.

I lowkey had the opposite story where my whole life I was proud to be descended from peasants and be part of those who don't know their ancestry--then my aunt dated a rich dude who paid for our ancestry to be done and found out we were descended from a long line of Scottish lairds and ladies who lived in castles before the British cast them out 💀

i'm irish american and i can recognize that my ancestors all benefited (and profited) from white supremacy and christian nationalism. it's important that i use my heritage to stand in solidarity with marginalized communities and uplift their voices.

It doesn’t matter if they don’t know their ancestors, Irish Americans are considered white in today’s society so they don’t experience racism, the historical context doesn’t CHANGE the current situation
