Compressed air burst out like a shockwave, loud enough to disturb passengers, wildlife, and nearby buildings. 
The old nose shape pushed air too suddenly, creating noise and drag. Engineers studied the kingfisher.
Its long, narrow beak lets pressure change gradually, not all at once.
The train’s nose was redesigned the same way. Noise dropped. Drag dropped.
