It can be expressed as a recusive sequence of n elements : An=(An-1 + 2R)||R, where A1=R. This series doesn't take the extra 2R on the edge, so calculating the limit of the sequence and adding 2R at the end - solves the problem.

if its an infinite series of resistors wouldn't that mean that Rxy is approaching 1ohm and that it would reach 1 ohm at infinity so wouldn't a more accurate answer for R total be 2.99999....ohms??
