Allah’s command for the angels to bow to Adam was not an act of worship, but an act of honor and submission to Allah’s command. It was a test of obedience and humility, demonstrating their willingness to follow Allah’s will even when the wisdom behind it was not fully apparent. The angels obeyed immediately, understanding that honor comes from Allah, not from one’s own nature or creation. Iblis, however, failed this test. He allowed arrogance to overcome obedience, believing that his origin, being created from fire, made him superior to Adam, who was created from clay. By measuring worth through creation rather than obedience, Iblis rejected Allah’s command, and it was this pride, not a lack of understanding, that led to his downfall. In essence, the command was meant to teach that true rank comes from submission to Allah, not from what one is made of or how one perceives oneself in comparison to others.

In the Quran, Iblis’s refusal is racism and arrogance, not theological piety. He refused to bow because he felt superior in his biological origin (fire vs. mud), not because he was confused about monotheism.

Bowing down does not inherently imply worship. There are numerous examples of people bowing down and prostrating to David in the Bible, but you wouldn’t automatically assume those people are worshipping David. David also prostrated to Saul in the Bible. That doesn’t automatically imply David is worshipping Saul. It is an act of reverence. The angels are not worshipping Adam. God told the angels to bow down to Adam and, according to Islam, angels are perfectly obedient, so they obeyed and bowed to Adam. In the modern context, prostrating is worship because that is how we are taught to pray, but God abrogates and commands as He wills and His command with the law brought by Muhammad is that we do not prostrate to anyone except Him.

The funny thing is that the one who didn't prostrate to Adam was the devil, so the devil was right in this case because he didn't want to prostrate to humans, strangely enough in the Quran the devil was punished for not wanting to prostrate

That sajaada - that bow down is not worship but as an act of honoring his high rank and the fulfillment of a vision, not an act of worshiping him. As you read along you will come across prophet yusuf (as) story - i believe you guys call him Joseph- at the end of that story everyone bows down -Joseph's parents and eleven brothers prostrate themselves before him when they are reunited in Egypt. - doesn’t mean they worship him - also satan didn’t bow down because of his arrogance-

It wasn’t a bow of worship but a command of honour and respect. Iblis showed his first signs of pride and arrogance. He worshiped Allah for years and was raised by his ranks to be in heaven. He said im better, im made of pure fire and he is from clay.

Qur'an doesn't say worship but bow down. As a sign of respect to God's new creation. The most favored of all. Also the jews dont like angel Gabriel that's why they portray Michael as the chief of the angels. But Gabriel is. Peace be upon them all

The angels did not bow to Adam of their own volition; they bowed because God commanded them to. If God commands an act, obeying that command is an act of worshiping God, not the object involved. By bowing to Adam, the angels were submitting to God’s will.
