Race is not an American concept. It’s a European invention exported through colonization and the transatlantic slave trade and whiteness was never fixed, it expanded when it needed to. Italians, Irish, Poles, Russians, Albanians none of them were “white” when they arrived in America. They were absorbed over generations because proximity to whiteness meant proximity to power. That’s not a personality, it’s a documented mechanism. And Latino identity was forged in that same colonial violence it’s not an aesthetic an Italian gets to borrow to dodge whiteness.
