It had been eight years and four months since she'd last stood on an opera stage — and she was six days from turning fifty. The world called her La Divina. The film about this night is called "The Return of Maria Callas": a return, not a farewell. But the fear was real, and no one backstage knew what would come out of her voice after so long in silence. What came out was this: she sang "O mio babbino caro" in the original key. Many singers, after years off stage, choose to lower an aria's key — safer for the breath, easier on the voice. She lowered nothing. In the encore that night, she looked at the audience and called them "my dear audience" — the same "dear" the character sings to her father, now returned to the people who had come to hear her. That performance was part of a tour that went on for almost another year. It was that tour — not this night — that was the last series of performances of her career. After it, Callas never performed in public again. She died in 1977.
