It’s honestly surprising how many times I’ve been insulted or talked about behind my back simply because I mostly speak English. I’ve heard people say that I should “speak Creole because I’m Creole” and that I should stop speaking English. But speaking a language does not take away from who I am or where I come from. Being Seychellois means embracing our Creole roots, but it also means being open to the world. Creole, English, and French are all part of our identity. Knowing how to express myself in different languages is not showing off it’s simply a part of who I am. We should stop making people feel bad for how they communicate. A person’s language does not define their pride, their culture, or their connection to their home.
