@thepainnpchenlow: Your first pain appointment is an interview. Here’s the question that tells you everything. #ChronicPain #PainManagement #PatientAdvocacy #painappointment #MedicalGaslighting
So I had to give up on finding a pain clinic they all said I was to medically complex and had tried everything (the last option that helped was opioids) which they refused to even talk about so I had ended up going to a palliative care specialist. Finally someone who treats me like a human being

Thank you for this information. It is very difficult to to navigate through this complex medical system that we have. 💜💜 I’m a firm believer that when I have a doctor, I want that doctor to be my partner, not a superior.💜💜 the doctor knows medicine and I know my body. In fact, I am the only person in the entire world who lives inside in my body. 💕

How do we know if we should see a pain provider rather than seeing different specialists for different types of pains?

Why is pain control happening to someone who doesn’t take pain medication daily but has a procedure and barely gets medication 😩

Biggest red flag with a new doctor is them insisting My issues are simple if I follow specific guidelines and dismissing all the trials/medications/plans I already know from experience are either not the reasons for the issues or simply don’t work for Me. Not trusting that I’ve been trying to figure it out almost My whole life and notice the patterns🙄🚩

I’ve got an appointment this month, not first but they’ve done nothing in the past. I’m going to write an email to them in advance to preempt the phone call

Another huge 🚩 is them asking Me to simplify all concerns to the “main ones” and to Focus on what’s “bothering You the most right now”. This was literally the reason I couldn’t be properly diagnosed for 20 years, it was engraved in Me as a child seeking help to only focus on the main issues, normalizing and pushing through everything else. I didn’t realize what a red flag this was. After giving up on figuring out My health and just self-manage it, I was mentored to self-advocate and treat the first visit as an interview. Because it IS a partnership to work together, this is MY body so I know it better than anyone ever could; and the doc has the knowledge to connect the dots to develop good path forward. I decided to lead with the fact “I have a lot of things going on but I do think They are connected and I need help figuring out how, and then work together on a plan to better My quality of life even slightly”. After living in pain My whole life without even understanding why, I now not only have diagnoses and treatment plans but also an amazing and caring team of doctors

I once had a PM walk in and before I even said anything....he said...and I quote..
"We don't prescribe opioids" I stood up, said thank you and left.
Some are rigid and will only rx a single opioid. Most want to implant things.
I have Dercums and GCA....no steroids, no implants ( makes things worse, injury causes more lipomas) No doctor understands the disease, it's frustrating.
Thank you for educating! ❤️

Fantastic advice!!! Patients should just say “ thank you for your time but I feel we wouldn’t be a good fit for my care I’m looking for” and just walk out. Don’t hang around to then leave feeling “ gaslight and dismissed!!

This happened to me with my pain management doctor. I asked him what he thought about two new medications that were just approved by the FDA. He told me then that he wasn’t going to see me anymore. For me to find someone else. I just asked what he thought about Tonya Journax and he got so defensive with me.
