One of my favorite things about learning the plants growing around us is realizing how many have been used as both food and traditional herbal medicine for generations. Spicebush is a native shrub found throughout much of eastern North America. In the fall, female plants produce those beautiful bright-red berries, but the berries aren’t the only useful part of this plant. The leaves, young twigs, bark, berries, and seeds all have a history of culinary or traditional use. The flavor changes depending on the part you harvest. The leaves are lighter, fresh, citrusy, and aromatic, while the berries are much stronger warm, peppery, citrusy, and reminiscent of allspice. The dried bark can also be ground and used as a warming spice, sometimes used as a wild alternative to cinnamon. Spicebush and true allspice aren’t the same plant, but they are relatives. Spicebush belongs to the Lauraceae family, the same botanical family as cinnamon, bay laurel, and avocado. True allspice (Pimenta dioica) belongs to the Myrtaceae family, so despite the similar flavor notes, they are not in the same botanical family. Ways to use spicebush: • Leaves and young twigs are used to make an aromatic tea • Ripe berries can be dried and grind into seasoning • Bark can be tea or ground warming spice • Ground berries to season meats, vegetables, marinades, sauces, baked goods, spice blends and even added to ice creams. The berries are POTENT, so you really don’t need much. Traditionally, spicebush preparations have been used for digestive complaints, colds, fever, and warming the body. Modern laboratory research has also investigated compounds in spicebush for antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity, but that doesn’t mean spicebush has been proven to prevent or treat those conditions in people. Foraging & safety:Never consume a wild plant unless you are 100% certain of the identification. Harvest responsibly, avoid contaminated or sprayed areas, and don’t strip bark from living shrubs it can seriously damage or kill the plant. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or managing a medical condition, check with a qualified healthcare professional before using medicinal amounts. There is so much food and traditional plant knowledge growing right around us. #spicebush #foraging #wildfood #herbalism #herbalwellness
